What Happens if You Swallow a Watermelon Seed?
READ: The Watermelon Seed by Greg Pizzoli
In The Watermelon Seed, Crocodile loves watermelon. He eats it for breakfast, for lunch, for dinner, and even dessert. Then one day he swallows a seed. Suddenly he is terrified that the seed will begin to sprout into a watermelon in his belly. Giant sized humor packed into brief, compact text. The simple, but expressive illustrations draw you into the character. This winner of the Theodor Seuss Geisel Award is sure to have your little one laughing out loud.
This over the top funny book is the perfect illustration of my childhood fears.
Once you've read the book, probably 50 times in two days because your kids are obsessed, take a break from giggling and explore watermelons and their seeds a little more closely.
GO get watermelons at your local farmers' market or grocery store. Hint: the heavier the watermelon the more juicy it will be!

Watermelon Activity Ideas
1. Count how many you had in each slice. Who had the most? The least? The biggest seed? (Math)
2. Plant some seeds in your garden. What will grow? (Science)
Create a work station for each kid. I like to leave this invitations up for my kids for mornings or during snack time.
Each spot needs:
*Paper cut into a watermelon slice shape.
*Work mat (optional, but helps define space)
*Red and Green Crayons
*Bowl of red, white, and green collage materials (we used beads, craft gems, and paper)
