DIY Foam Counting Train
We have read "Freight Train" by Donald Crews about a million times in the past year. This classic is the perfect blend of simplicity and detail that is soaked up by the reader.
During one of our recent readings, our toddlers - currently obsessed with counting - wanted to count the trains on each page. This inspired the foam train.
The magic of foam is that, when wet, it will stick to your bathtub. We have used this to our advantage in several ways, but most recently to create a tub train for counting.
I drew the rough idea of a train onto the foam, cut it out, wrote numbers and dots for counting directly onto the foam and brought them to bath time. We counted the trains. Took them down and practiced putting them back in order. Drove the trains around the tub.
- Count trains in your favorite train book - Count other trains (BRIO, Thomas, etc) - Make a foam train to match the colors in "Freight Train" and have your child help you put it in order.
