Our Bear Snack was done as part of our Karma Wilson Author Study for the Virtual Book Club. We love Karma Wilson's books and would highly recommend you reading a bunch, but this activity could be done with just "Bear Snores On" or as part of a study about bears and hibernation. Regardless, start with the book.
We have read "Bear Snores On" countless times. This is one of my all-time favorite read aloud books. There is so much potential for dramatic reading here and the story is full of delicious language and the ultimate climactic surprise. A bear is taking his nap in his cave while a collection of animals come out of the cold for a snack in the cave. The party grows and suddenly the bear starts to stir. Read it! You will not be sorry. Once you and your children are familiar with the story - it is time to act it out!
Gather your snack supplies and either create a cave (sheet over a table would work well) or set up a tent. We set up a tent and they helped me make our "tea". We warmed some water and then stirred in water and honey. Then we arranged everything in our tent and I started to read.
The first time through, because this was our first re-enacting experience, I read the story as we acted it out and played the part of the bear. They picked which animals should play the other parts as we went along. They were thrilled with the idea and quickly caught on to making their animals act out what the characters in the story were doing.
Once we were done, we of course had to do it again. This time they were both the bear and I did the smaller animal parts. We again read the book as we acted it out. Older Preschoolers might be able to do this without having the actual story read aloud as they go. This however worked well as an introduction to the idea of re-creating a story.
