Author Study: Arnold Lobel
When we visited the Georgia Aquarium, there was an amazing special exhibit about frogs and toads. Being the book lovers we are, introducing our little ones to Arnold Lobel's classic tales about Frog and Toad was natural. We also read a couple of his other books. These are generally shelved with Early Readers at your library, but we have found these to often be the perfect length for toddlers as well.
1. Frog and Toad Are Friends
2. Frog and Toad Together
3. Frog and Toad All Year
All three of these are collections of short stories about best friends Frog and Toad. They are silly, simple and often sweet tales. When reading chapter books or collections such as these, we often choose one story per child to read in each sitting.
4. Mouse Tales
5. Uncle Elephant
Our toddlers also enjoyed the short stories in these two books. We especially enjoyed the story of Uncle Elephant on the train - this could be because our household is train obsessed.
Our Early Author Studies for the youngest children means reading a collection by the same author. We read and re-read their stories aloud. We spend the most time on our favorites and do a few follow-up extensions based on these stories. As our children get older, our author studies will become more complex, but for now we are working on the understanding that a person writes a book and finding authors that we love and want to fill our house with their inspiring and entertaining words.
