Do you have goals for the new year? I have mentioned before how much I love a new year. I love a fresh start. A new day, a new Monday, a new month, but a new year is the best. It holds so much possibility.
Last year my goal was to Choose Happy
. It was a good goal to focus on because last year was rough. My diagnosis with Cystic Fibrosis. My continuing battle against the infection in my lung and the never ending stream of doctors, nurses, PICC lines, medicines and side effects. Twin three year olds.
Because of my goal, truly, I was more able to focus on the good. I have a reminder that pops up every morning and says "Choose Happy" and there were some days I really needed that. It enabled me to see the joy. The make choices daily to enjoy my tea, make time to be outside, to take more photos, and all of the other things that I know make me happy. It wasn't perfect of course and there were days I still had trouble shaking the grouch
, but I think overall I am a more positive person than I was a year ago.
This is going to be a year of change and transition. My kids will go to Kindergarten half-way through the year. We will likely move to a new state at some point. The CF and lung infection will require some on going battle and there is some discussion of surgery.
My goals, which are always a mixture of work and personal, are to focus on the three things that I find myself focusing on here.
I started this blog with the intention of writing about family local travel. That has majorly shifted as I have come to realize that 1) I have never been good at doing just one thing at a time and 2) there is so much more to life. I want my kids to have well rounded experiences that will make them well rounded people. To me, this means they need a combination of going places, reading good books and playing every day. This is where I find my balance both here on Bambini Travel and in life. When I made my goals for this year, I focused on those three areas.
I LOVED my monthly mini-goals last year but this year I have big ambitious plans for myself so I ended up with several big goals that I am going to break down into smaller parts.
*Go Somewhere Every Month
I have true wanderlust. I get crabby and restless when we don't fit a trip in regularly. I started to plan for a new place every month this year but realized that wasn't practical for us with the time and money involved so my goal is to go somewhere. I'm hoping for a lot of new, but I'm also just okay returning to the same beaches.
Some of my favorite trips last year were;
Atlanta-Savannah-St Simons Georgia Road Trip
Beach Vacation in Orange Beach AL
Camping in Tallulah Gorge State Park
Weekend in Houston Texas
Weekend in New Orleans
Ship Island Birthday Adventure
Thanksgiving in New York City
READ good books
*Read 30 Books
This goal is just for me. When I turned 30 I set all kinds of goals for myself. I call it my 60 before 60 list. One of my goals is to read 1000 books. If you do the math, that is about 33 books a year, a pace that I am not currently reaching. I read a little over 20 books in 2015, so my goal in 2016 is to read 30.
If you're curious, I read a little of everything. Fiction, non-fiction, travel books, parenting books. The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd was probably my favorite of the ones I read last year.
I have been writing bits and pieces of a literacy book since college. On the site I've shared lots of booklists, tips for reading aloud, and teaching literacy naturally already. This is the year I'm going to actually sit down and write it. (And come up with a more clever title than "The Literacy Book")
PLAY every day
*Launch Toddler Curriculum
There is more information coming about this soon, but last year I wrote a Toddler Curriculum inspired by the Learning Through Adventure philosophy. It is being edited right now and I'm excited to share more details soon! Last year, the Bambini Field Guide was my first experience with publishing anything. I learned a lot and I'm excited to bring out another idea this year.
*Play Every Day Project

That's me + 2016. What are your goals for the year? I'd love to hear about them in the comments
