How to Enjoy the Beach in Winter
The beach in the winter? That might sound strange. The water is cold. The air is cold. What's the point?
I love the beach. I also love swimming, paddle boarding, and other water sports and the feeling of the hot sun on my face. These things are less appealing in the winter. However, I also love the sound of waves crashing against the shore, I love the way the colors of the sky reflect on the water, and the smell of the salty water. While the beach in the winter isn't the same as the beach in the summer, it can still be fun. During our road trip in January we spent a few days on St Simons Island near Brunswick. There is a lot to do on the island, which I shared in my St Simons with Kids post, but we spent a fair amount of time at the beach even though it was January. Here is how we enjoyed the beach.
5 Simple Ways for Families to Enjoy the Beach in Winter:
1. Chase Seagulls
Our son took this on as his personal mission. I'm not entirely sure where he wanted to birds to go, but he chased them up and down the beach.
2. Watch the Sunrise (or Sunset)
We did both. Our kids urging us to be early risers and being on the East Coast, sun rises made the most sense. We crept out to the beach early in the morning and watched the sun rise up over the horizon. The colors are spectacular that time of day.
3. Dig in the Sand
This is something you can do any time of the year. Bring your sand toys and get to work.
4. Fly Airplanes (or Kites)
Okay, so my daughter is completely in the water here. She can't help herself. However, flying airplanes or kites are great fun on the beach as well. Stomp Rockets are also fun!
5. Draw Letters or Pictures in the Sand
Find a stick or shell or shovel and use it to draw in the sand. Depending on your child's interests, draw a picture or shapes or write messages.
