Madison WI is one of the best cities for families in the country. We had the great fortune to live about an hour away for several years and made many trips down to the city. There are a wide array of family friendly spots to visit, but we are sharing our favorites today.
PM: State Street & Wisconsin State Capitol
The Capitol is open to the public on weekdays from 8am to 6pm and weekends from 8am to 4pm. Free tours are available. It is a beautiful building to visit. Afterwards, wander down State Street. State Street runs between the Capitol and the University of Wisconsin connecting the two main hubs of excitement in the city. It is a great place for people watching and lined with interesting and unique shops.
DINNER: Restaurant on State Street
After you wander a bit, find somewhere on State Street. There are dozens of places that are family friendly. Noodles and Chipotle are obvious choices, the pasta at Tutto Pasta is also delicious although more expensive. There is something for everyone on State Street.
AM: Dane County Farmers' Market
This is one of the largest and best Farmers' Markets I have ever visited. It is in the Wisconsin State Capitol Square from 6am-2pm every Saturday this time of year. The lawns and streets around the Capitol are taken over by tents selling everything imaginable.
LUNCH: Pick up Lunch at the Farmers' Market
PM: Henry Villas Zoo
This is an awesome and FREE zoo. It is the perfect size for young children and full of exciting animals. The monkey house is our favorite.
DINNER: Great Dane Brew Pub
Tasty and family friendly. This is a popular local option.
AM: Children's Museum
Hands down my favorite place for little ones in Madison. Children ages 0 and up can find something to explore at this carefully designed museum. Get there early before the crowds hit.
LUNCH: Ian's Pizza
Macaroni pizza anyone? Everything here is delicious. They will also make special orders and we had no problem providing our son with Dairy Free pizza.
PM: Enjoy the Outdoors
If you have a little more time to explore Madison, get outside. The city is full of outdoor delights. We love the playgrounds. McKee Farms Park and Lakeland Park are two of our favorites. You can also visit the twin lakes (Medota and Menona). The Monona Terrace is a popular place to enjoy the lake.
Here are a few more places we love in Madison.
Fall is a great time for a trip to the farm. We loved this apple picking farm for little ones.
Olbrich Botanical Gardens
Gorgeous outdoor and indoor green space. This is a fun, warm place to explore on a cold or rainy day.
Kids in the Rotunda
If you happen to be in town during one of their event Saturdays, the Overture Center puts on delightful free family events.
