The Jackson Zoo has some fun animals (giraffes to name one) but in all honesty, our favorite feature of the zoo is the train ride. (Our second favorite is the awesome splash pad). Being train fans, we are always on the lookout for train rides.
The Zoo itself is basically a loop. The majority of the animals are native to Mississippi. Alligators anyone? We enjoy giraffes, hippo, and flamingos the most. It is a fairly small zoo. Our three year olds can walk it without getting too tired, but I suggest a stroller for younger children. This is not the San Diego zoo, not even the Milwaukee Zoo, but if you have animal fans it is decent.
The highlights for us though are the splash pad and the train ride. The splash pad is within the zoo and included with admission. The train ride is outside of the zoo and costs a little extra. Both are fun and worth the drive on their own.
*Tickets for the train ride need to be purchased at the zoo ticket booth.
*Train goes in a simple loop around the wooded area around the pond.
*If visiting the zoo, the map is somewhat helpful but extremely out of scale.
