It has been a little noisy in the backseat for the past hour. Our once content twins have lost interest in their kindles, worn out the Paw Patrol DVD, and gone through most of the activities I carefully packed before we left home. We are now 7 hours into our 12 hour trip and even the magic of music isn't quite doing the trick. They need a break from the car.
Truthfully, we all need a break.
When we set off from Mississippi headed for Wisconsin with our two four year olds even I thought we were a little nuts. 12 hours in the car with preschoolers is not my idea of fun.
Most of the time, I carefully plan our roadtrips. I lay out our stops, pack bags of activities, and make sure we aren't spending too much time in the car. However, sometimes life happens.
Surgeries need to be done.
Family needs to be reached.
Timing and life dictate our travel. When this happens, it is difficult to have everything planned like you might like when you're traveling with kids.
It's times like these that I'm glad I compulsively pin things. Around the Missouri border I started looking through my board of midwestern family travel destinations. A lot of them would take up too much time in our already long day, but then I saw the Turtle Park.
This little park is tucked into a neighborhood across the freeway from the St Louis Zoo. (The zoo is also FREE and awesome if you have a little more time) Turtle Park is small, but tons of fun.
There are rolling hills that beg you to climb and run and roll. There are tall trees for shade. And then there are the turtles.
The turtles are in various sizes and are scattered around the park. Their groves are challenging to climb and the polished backs are perfect for sliding. It is the most unusual and delightful slide. Even I couldn't resist climbing up and riding down again and again.
When we slide one last time and ran back to the car, our cheeks were rosy, our hearts were pumping, and we were re-energized for another 6 hours in the car.
You can't ask for much more than that from a pit stop.
